Oye, you guys are getting nasty in here. But being a jerk at heart I'll chip in my 2 cents.....

As far as the topic, Sarah Palin.... Outside her Miss South Carolina impressions at debates, I honestly can't see that she was chosen because she was the best for the job. If she had been best for the job I'd hate to see the other options. McCain would probably be doing much better in the polls if he'd chosen say Hucklebee, for example, his view are well known, he put up decent fight in the Republican primaries, and he already had an established support base. Palin, was a virtual unknown to most to the American Public minus Alaskans, she's not proven that she has the proper merits for the VP position after debates and campaign speeches, they why was she chosen? Only thing I can think of is to try and use her Sex as a Weapon. McCain turned the Election into a Sexist campaign by choosing Palin in order to try and gain a stronger vote in the conservative female population, and to try and win over a portion of the the Clinton supporters. Now we could ask Why didn't Obama choose Clinton for the same reason.....She had a strong support base as an added benefit.

I think Clinton was left on the road side because like many of the public Obama really wasn't comfortable with how she campaigned. Her voting record in the Senate was often directly opposed to what she was saying while campaigning showing a complete lack of personal integrity. I'll say I don't know a lot about Biden, but I honestly think this guy would have been a better VP than Hillary.
    At least he's honest....

One thing I really do wish they would do is get rid of the electoral college though I mean seriously a candidate can win the White House without the popular vote of the citizens of the US. It happened in 2000 with Gore vs Bush, and prior to that with Adams vs Jackson in 1824. Jackson had Popular and Electoral votes but not the number of Electoral to secure victory. The house of Representatives chose Adams as President. Again in Hayes vs Tilden 1876 where Tilden has the Popular but not Electoral Votes, 1888 with Harrison vs Cleveland where Cleveland won the popular not the Electoral votes. Right now though if the election was to happen Polls say Obama would win the Electoral College by about 80 Electoral votes, so nah the Republican's don't and it's doubtful they'll gain the lead in the next 2 weeks.

So all you lil die hard Republicans get ready to bend knee and go "Obama you da man Dawg!"

Its not just here....things are getting nasty everywhere, by the looks of the news today.
with those hatfully protesting polling stations.
White pride members putting things in peoples mailboxes, on there cars, hanging dummys in there yards by nooses.

    Things are indeed getting nasty.....

The United States has defined terrorism under the Federal Criminal Code. Chapter 113B of Part I of Title 18 of the United States Code defines terrorism and lists the crimes associated with terrorism.[23] In Section 2331 of Chapter 113b, terrorism is defined as:

…activities that involve violent… or life-threatening acts… that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State and… appear to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and… (C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States… [or]… (C) occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States…"

By that definition, most Civil Liberty Unions and Hate groups are either flat out Terrorist organizations or bordering on it (though I define many of them as Economic Terrorists). I say round up the heads of all these groups and tell them to stay the Hell out of Washington, keep their money out of members of Senate's pockets, shut up or go to Gitmo.........
I doubt Jesse Jackson would be very popular there.....Nor would the leaders of many of the Gay and Lesbian movements.....Come to think of it the Neo-Nazi movement leadership would be a rather unpopular lot too....

Take La Raza for example, all the lobbying to attempt to ensure that the Immigration reform bill provided amnesty for as many illegal immigrants (read that as criminals under US Law) as possible. For all the Millions they spent how many South American and Mexican natives that would qualify for immigrant status legally could they have helped? Lets look at the NAACP, how does their threats of economic ruin through boycotts help their cause? How bout all the Gay Pride parades every other weekend disrupting normal commerce. PETA and their attempts to brainwash our children by having materials distributed at schools in some parts of the country. Seriously if a Vegan or Vegetarian diet is so healthy, why does the country with the one of the highest vegetarian populations on the planet have the highest rate of heart disease (India for those interested)?

They all do harm to the country as a whole, their messages might be good but the method of delivering them isn't. Shut up or Locked up is my view...just like I wish they'd put in a 3 strikes rule on illegal immigrants. 1st time deported, 2nd time deported with a tracking chip like dogs get...3rd time, shot and mailed home.....

Also something I want all of you good Christian's to think about.....where does your weekly tithing go? How much is used to pay off a politician for a vote that you may or may not agree with...

    Oh Hi Draconi!

Since, the rich people are who supply the country with most of the jobs, who would you work for if you quit working for them?

Business' and Corporations provide most of the country with jobs, you can own a business without being rich. You can own a rather successful one and not be earn a huge amount. Take Drew Curtis that owns Fark, he only takes a $60,000 a year salary, while that's more than many it still doesn't compare with what the "rich" earn.

    A fair point.

However, why in this country must we punish success?

I'm not out to punish success myself, I wrote earlier I'm in favor of the Federal Income Tax being replaced with a Federal Sales tax. This wouldn't punish the Rich, what it would do is prevent them from using their money to provide means to hide it from taxation. The Wealthy don't pay an equal percentage of their income as the poor, they know how to filter and invest it in non-taxable ventures something a poor person might know but can't afford to do. That's why you see the Extremely wealth listed by Net Worth, a large portion of their financial worth is tied up in non-taxable annuities, business ventures, private corporations (which provide tax Breaks) and things like Real Estate they pay taxes on but if done wisely almost always yields a huge return with appreciation, problem is the area where this holds true the value of property is outside most people's means.

Putting in a Federal Sales tax on all new goods and services would mean the Wealthy get taxed on what they spend...They invest their money it's a new service that's being provided for them..they pay the 22% Sales Tax. They buy a New Car every year...22% sales Tax...Joe Blow the Blue Collar worker buys a Used Car...No Sales Tax and he's bringing in more minus the Federal Income Tax. Same holds true for any second hand goods he might buy. It brings your portion of the Tax burden more inline with your lifestyle, which for most is ultimately dictated by their income.

Corporations are Taxed on Profit After Expenditures, They avoid the majority of the tax burden because of this.. A Federal Sales Tax would prevent this, they wouldn't be hit with a death knell, $.022 Cents on the Dollar does add up but it's not a Huge Sum. They would though carry the majority of the Federal Funding that's attributed to Taxation. But once again it's based on what they spend and not earn...

Hmm.. thats way over my head I guess.

But isnt it true that the "rich" already pay 90% of the total tax bill as it is?

The rest of us cant carry the burden of the final 10%?

You'll never be able to close all these loopholes. They will always find a way to protect their money. They earned, why not!

If they are forced to pay MORE, jobs are gonig to disappear. I think eveyrone knows that. Redistribution of the wealth....is a bad thing.

Mir, I posted on the amount the "rich" already pay in taxes. The wealthiest 10% pay approximately 68% of the tax burden already. Anyway, it's all in my previous post. What baffles me is people who think they're actually going to tax corporations. It's been said by liberal and conservative alike - corporations do not pay taxes; they pass it on to their customers. In a nutshell, if their taxes are raised, our prices are going to go up even more. IMHO, raising taxes is not the answer. It's time to curb the spending. I've done a budget in my household for years now and that's why the hubby and I do as well as we do. I don't need the government giving me a handout and I sure as heck don't want them in my life any more than they already are!
P.S. And I'm with you sir. Redistribution of wealth is totally asinine. If you can't earn it on your own, THEN YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT!

I use to be 100% in agreement with this idea but I realized life is not so simple. In the poorer parts of America it isn't as easy as going out and getting a job. Fact is it is very difficult especially if you cannot afford to take care of yourself. The reason being because your parents couldn't do it. Poverty is a vicious cycle that is very very hard to break. I am constantly brainstorming on how to overcome poverty but it is a very difficult subject. I have already determined that many times the people try as best they can but it isn't enough. Gangs, violence, drugs, corrupt police, addictions, abuse. very difficult to live with and harder to get away from. And then you have the superficial views of our country where it's all money, status, gettin the best lookin guy/girl. It doesn't bode well with poor areas.

Also if someone happens to have a child. Then they have to take care of their baby even though they couldn't even take care of themselves. It is easy to say "well don't have sex" but in reality resisting one of the strongest human urges is not so easy. "wear a condom" Too bad the kids there cannot even get a proper education with the basics. There schools are dumpy and have out dated books. Who is gonna tell them to wear a condom?

Again poverty is a cycle that is nigh on impossible to break except for the rap stars or people who were able to work out of it through generations.

    Yeah redistribution is ugly.

Small businesses make this country go. Now they want to tax a small business making 250,000.00 ..more.

Why should someone who worked 10-15 hours a day...to build his small business into something, creating jobs along the way for people...have to give his money to Barak Obama to give to someone who don't deserve it.

When the business owner reaches that 250,000.00 threshold, why not let him redistribute his own wealth.... by expanding...and creating more jobs.. so he can make more money...and create more jobs.

Under this new idea...(socialism)... jobs are going to go away...and stay away.

Ultima, you're one of the few who I disagree with (somewhat) that I could still sit down and talk with. Thank you for being so respectful even though stating an opposing viewpoint. It speaks highly of your character.

My husband and I have been poor as church mice. We had 3 children and I couldn't afford to work with how poorly women were paid in those days. We sold our car and bought a cheaper one, got rid of cable TV, cooked all of our meals at home and every other cost cutter you can imagine. When I look back on it now, I realize those were some of our best days. We learned to work as a family unit and we learned the value of budgeting. So many of the "poor" nowadays have cable TV, cell phones and eat at McDonalds. I know we're looking at different generations but that's where the problem lies. Education! It is a vicious cycle and our government has allowed so many to use welfare as a bed rather than a trampoline to a better life. I don't have the answers and I wish I did but I think that with your common sense mentality, you can see how frustrating it is for someone who HAS been there to see people who ARE there and refuse to leave. Why didn't God create us with life's instruction manual attached? *heavy sigh*

Mir, the hubby and I own our own businesses and though we don't make the $250,000, we still plan to pay off our debts (other than our house) and save, save, save for what we fear is coming. I know some consider that foolish but we're believers in praying for the best but planning for the worst.

Like the way Greenspan thought it would work in the banking industry?

People will take their money were they can make the most in return, that doesn't guarantee the person will invest it in the US.

Small business needs a good infra structure, employees who are well educated and who come to work without a lot of worries to get the best return. That's why taxes are needed.

That's one of the biggest issues, look at how Wal-Mart was 15 years ago compared to how it is today, back then it invested in America. You saw signs everywhere Made in the USA, to be quite frank I'd be more than willing to require any retail company, be it cars or pantyhose that employees over 10,000 people be required that 85% of their merchandise be made here in the US. I large portion of your major manufactures already have US facilities, for others it would stop outsourcing. The US needs to wipe it's ass with NAFTA as it encourages outsourcing, my view is If you want to do business in the US then Invest in the US.

Usually if it a subject I find important to myself and if the person is intelligent I usually provide respectable arguments. Thanks though for the compliment because people aren't always like you and they can't see when someone is being respectable or not.

All the things you did to save money were like you said, smart, thought out, logical. America doesn't seem to promote that anymore. The majority of mainstream rappers praise the thug and gangster lifestyle they are making up or once used to live. And even the rappers that talk about it but denounce it, it doesn't matter. People want to be rich these days. It seems to be more than ever. Also it seems with the crack down on drugs by the government the drug selling profession has flourished. Since they are hard to get and then even harder to get quality drugs the price increases and if you sell you will make some serious dough. And then the police will not always be fighters for justice. They will make deals with the dealers to allow them to continue. So when the rules are blurred it gets even more confusing.

The way you and your husband handled it was obviously the best way. The people in poor areas get money and buy clothes, or nice cars, but they still cannot afford a stable home or even heating or cooling. But not all people are like that each family has their own case and it is far from always their fault.

Though I do not agree with just giving them money like through welfare. Problem is it cannot be guaranteed they will actually use it the right way. And sometimes I think if you have more kids you get a bigger check. So these people have more kids just for the money. Welfare should not be something you live on but something that helps boost you up so you can stabilize yourself and live a better life.

I think high corporate taxes lead to outsourcing more then anything.

Why would someone want to keep their business in the US when they can start it elsewhere for half the tax cost?

I would love to see our company's stay here rather then take their business somewhere else and not bring the dollars back here.

NAFTA promotes outsourcing by removing Import/Export taxation on items between the US Mexico and Canada. Requiring business to rely on American Made goods here in the US would promote US Business. I really don't expect most of the folks here to understand how awful NAFTA hurt areas of the US. Look at the Textiles Industry...It's almost completely gone and was the major source of jobs in the South East, why because goods can be made cheaper in Mexico and sent here with less cost than making them in the US...They still sell for the same amount though...Same holds true for the Automobile Industry in the Upper Midwest, Cheaper to manufacture in Mexico, hurts the American People now without jobs.

I say Nix NAFTA, put a high Import Tax on finished goods, and none on Raw Materials. Put a High Export Tax on Raw Materials and none on Finished Goods. Do half of you even realize how bad the Government has sold the US population out? Seriously the Department of Energy authorized enough Natural Gas to supply 1.4 million homes for a year to be Exported to Japan..yet gas heating prices are expected to be up 24% this winter. Umm ya Go Republican Party...scream and yell for rights to drill for Oil and Natural gas then sell it else where for a buck......

Actually people demand low prices, and we like to export ourselves. The idea is that we make the products we are good at, and the less developed countries fabricate less technical and labor intensive goods. The less developed countries make some money and their standard of living increases, so they afford to buy our more high tech products, we pay less for clothes and other mass fabricated items and can afford a larger house and/or buy more high tech goodies.

When you put export duties on raw materials, chances are others will do the same.

I don't know exactly but drilling in ANWAR would only meet our needs for a very short period of time, the key with fossil fuels is that we use them more responsible. Develop (and we have already and export them as well) fuel efficient systems and alternative fuel methods, so we have long term solutions and are less dependent on the whims of the oil/gas market.

As an example Ford has build a new truck plant, that has all kinds of new technolgy and uses a lot less energy than a conventional plant would use.

But the problem with your position is that the World's Standard of Living is not equal.

Are you going to propose that as the world becomes a World, that this HUGE disparity in Standards of Living can continue to exist?

How about the extremely toxic waste, that was outsourced to South Korea, Taiwan and South East Asia? You know the Semi-Conductor fabrication process?

Conversely, how would you propose the equalization of the Standards of Living world wide?
